Norwegian minister visits CO2 storage laboratory site

03. mars 2010

Norwegian minister visits CO2 storage laboratory site Norway’s Minister of Petroleum and Energy was present at pilot geological studies that may turn the Svelvik Ridge in southern Norway into a unique field laboratory – an important tool for scientists who are developing the technology needed for secure underground storage of captured CO2.

The idea is to establish a field laboratory at the Svelvik Ridge in Hurum outside Oslo, that can test current methods for monitoring how the CO2 behaves deep below the surface at different storage sites, and thereby contribute to the development of regulations and procedures for CO2 storage monitoring.

The project at Hurum has been successfully submitted to EUROGIA+, the R&D programme for Low Carbon Energy Technologies sitting within the intergovermental EUREKA procedure, and is consequently co-financed by the CLIMIT Programme via Gassnova SF, which is responsible for the Norwegian state’s interests in CO2 capture and storage, and by France’s Ministry of Finance, Economy and Industry and by the project partners who will also contribute their own resources.
