CO2 technology development now also to include industrial emissions
On 19 November 2009, the Norwegian government decided to broaden the mandate of the CO2 research and development programme CLIMIT to also include industrial emissions.– Here at Gassnova, we are really motivated for being able to increase the scope of our operations, and we look forward to contributing to the development of solutions for other emissions than those from oil, coal and gas-fired power plants, says Gassnova's CEO Bjørn-Erik Haugan.
Broadened mandate for CLIMIT
Gassnova will now have the possibility to stimulate solutions that are specifically adapted to the reduction of industrial CO2 emissions. – Our organisation will quickly be able to contribute in this field. We are a highly-skilled and has a well-balanced technology environment, says Vice President Technology Klaus Schöffel. This is an excellent basis for enabling us to fulfill our new role, Mr. Schöffel adds.
Development activities will now be extended to also include development needs for a diversity of industries. Establishing closer cooperation with industry will help to enlarge and broaden the CCS community. There are many common features between the development of industrial solutions and the applications on which Gassnova so far has focused.
The increasing numbers of players and growing demand enhance the market potential of the entire CCS industry. This provides favourable conditions for development activities, which in turn will have knock-on effects for all involved players.
It is not possible to successfully establish CCS without involving industry, so this is a positive addition to the work on carbon capture and storage. It is thus a considerable advantage to concentrate the state's efforts within the already existing responsibilities of the CLIMIT programme. This widened scope of Gassnova's responsibilities enables us to accumulate the acquired knowledge and to use these skills in the continued efforts to develop CCS solutions, Klaus Schöffel concludes.
